Synopsis. The Duke has been too lenient. He deputises the stricter Angelo to rule in his place with noble Lord Escalus to help. Friar Peter helps the Duke disguise himself so he can spy on the deputy and the town. Angelo condemns to death Claudio for getting fianc¨¦e Juliet pregnant. His life will be spared if Isabella, his chaste sister and novice nun, will sleep with Angelo. The Duke arranges for Marianna a former fianc¨¦e of Angelo to take Isabella¡¯s place. Meanwhile, on Angelo¡¯s orders, the Provost and constable Elbow imprison Mistress Overdone ?and Pompey Bum for running brothels. Lucio, a conman, wheels and deals his way through all of the characters but eventually finds himself in trouble. The Duke brings about the marriages of Angelo and Marianna, and Claudio and Juliet. The Duke wants to marry Isabella. Lucio must marry Kate Keepdown, a harlot he got pregnant.
